The Study Group was founded in Britain in 1972 when a dozen collectors of censored mail answered an advertisement placed by the late Tony Torrance in a philatelic journal. The original dozen expanded rapidly and a Bulletin was produced and distributed, quarterly to begin, later six times a year, then quarterly again since 1988. At that time the Forces Postal History Society and the Anglo-Boer War Society were already well-established in UK, as was the War Cover Club in USA. It was decided to collaborate with these societies but to steer clear of their particular fields, although there is inevitably an overlap in some respects. CCSG maintains an on-going close relationship with ArGe Zensur in Germany. CCSG also covers the suspension of mail services in wartime. |
In the USA, Dan Mayo and Bill Broderick were already active collectors of censored civil mails. To reduce costs a ‘branch’ operation was set up for the Americas which continues to function smoothly. The Bulletin is presently published quarterly in England for all members other than in the Americas. For members in the Americas it is printed and distributed by a member in USA. Membership covers all continents with about 100 in UK, 50 in Europe, 80 in the Americas and about a dozen in the rest of the world. |
